Housing Options Scotland

Military Matters

Are you currently serving in HM Forces or are you a veteran? If you, or a family member, has a disability (a mental health problem, a learning disability or a physical disability) we can help you to solve your housing problems.

An Introduction to our work

Military Matters (MM) is a specialist project within Housing Options Scotland focusing on housing issues affecting people serving in the military in Scotland, service personnel transitioning into civilian life and veterans.  MM provides housing information, advice and support to family members too. Inclusion of veterans’ families and existing service personnel is a key part of our work.

In 2016 we are holding information and advice sessions at almost all the major military establishments in Scotland.  Further information below.

We are also researching “housing pathways” – how people ended up living where they are now and what experiences they had getting there – for service leavers and veterans.  Further information below.

MM has helped over 150 people in 4 years.  Our team includes veterans and partners of veterans from the Royal Navy, Army and the Royal Air Force.  We have first-hand experience of living and working in the military environment.

Rear Admiral (Retd) Mike Gregory RN was Flag Officer Scotland and Northern Ireland and is a supporter of the Military Matters project.

“The Military Matters project combines Housing Options Scotland’s expertise in providing targeted advice to find the right home in the right place with the desire to see the armed forces community overcome some of the disadvantages service life can bring.  It is especially valuable to those facing the uncertainty of transition into civilian life and those with a disability whose housing needs may seem daunting or challenging.  The Military Matters team are there to offer support every step of the way.”.

How can Military Matters help?

Individual Tailored Support and Advice

If you, or a member of your family, is disabled or suffers from a mental health condition and you are a serving member of the armed forces or a veteran, you can access our service.

Call our voicemail service on 0131 247 1400 or email us at: militarymatters@housingoptionsscotland.org.uk

We will get back to you to explain what happens next.  We can provide a housing options report which will focus on your unique circumstances.  This service is provided by core funding from the Scottish Government.  We have helped many disabled veterans find the right home in the right place.

Information and Advice Sessions

Thanks to a grant from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund, the MM team will be visiting many military establishments in Scotland to provide information and advice sessions.

You can come to these sessions, bring your family too, we know that they are an important part of making decisions about your housing.   At the end of each session we can offer you confidential advice, one to one. The information sessions cover;

  • Social and Private Renting
  • House purchase
  • Incentives available to first time buyers
  • Using the resources and discounts available, saving money
  • Dealing with housing associations, local authorities and other stakeholders
  • Moving on, where to turn for advice after leaving the armed forces

These sessions are free, no strings attached, no commercial organisations are involved.  Visit our Facebook page for up-to-date information on these events including who from your local unit/base organisation to speak to.

Using feedback from these sessions we are developing a publication which will be available online and in hard copy for people leaving the armed forces in Scotland.

Working with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) and Joint Housing Advice Office (JSHAO)

If you are leaving the armed forces, the MM team work closely with colleagues in the CTP and JSHAO to ensure we attend transition events across Scotland.  These are usually employment focused but we also work with our Army colleagues at 51 Brigade to deliver a bespoke Civilian Housing Brief on behalf of the JSHAO.  You can find dates and details regarding the CTP and JSHAO programmes via the following links;

Any CTP or JSHAO dates will be noted on our website or via our Facebook page

Can you help us to help your Oppos?

The MM project has grant funding to look into veteran’s housing pathways:

How do veterans find themselves living where they are now?

What experiences did they have, good and bad, when leaving the armed forces?

And what do they know now that they wish they had known then?

This project allows us to explore what works and what can be improved in housing information and advice.  We know veterans and service leavers turn to different agencies for advice, these could include service agencies such as the JSHAO, local welfare teams, local councils, Citizens’ Advice services or military charities.

We want to speak to service leavers and veterans in 2016 to hear their experiences first-hand.  From this, we will produce a report. This will be shared with all relevant bodies in Scotland.  We will promote what works well and make recommendations for improvements. Our aim is to make housing pathways easier for future veterans.
